The context of Urbino, both historical and physical, provides an outstanding laboratory for design that is both liberating and challenging for architecture students arriving from San Antonio, Texas, where the historical layers of settlement are far fewer, and the landscape is generally flat. The project for the replacement of the Liceo “Raffaello” also introduces the topic of contemporary trends in spaces designed for education, a particular focus of the practice of MtA Associati of Milan, headed by Monica Mazzolani and Antonio Troisi. Together, these factors have been the focus of the current design project, and it is our sincere wish that the
designs presented here will stimulate discussion about the new replacement school and contribute to an ongoing relationship between UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning and the community of Urbino.
